Start of distillation in ancient advanced civilisations in order to make salt, pitch, quicksilver, camphor or carbon black

350 BC

Aristotle describes the principle of distillation

8th/9th centuries

Distillation process refined by Persian and Arab alchemists

Searching for the “elixir of life” or the “philosopher’s stone”, alchemists and monks hit upon a substance in wine which can be separated and distilled through heat (alcohol)

From 12th century

Distilled alcohol makes its way into Christian monasteries and princely houses as a medicine and intoxicating drink Known as “aqua ardens” (= burning water) and later as “aqua vitae” (= water of life) due to its healing effect

12th century

The Aggstein family’s place of origin is built: Castle Aggstein in the wine and fruit-growing region of Wachau (Lower Austria)

1885

Ursula Aggstein starts distilling schnapps in Going near Kitzbühel

1948

The distillery beside the Stanglwirt Hotel is built — Aggstein’s first commercial distillery

1963

Distillery expanded to become one of the most modern in Austria

1977

The patent for the original “Jagatee” is submitted

2012

“Edellese” premium line launched

2014

Relocation to St. Johann in Tirol and commissioning of new distillation plant
