Maturation

Fresh distillate usually tastes a little rough still. Only through storage do they develop their harmonious taste which is why this is one of the most important steps in the making of schnapps. Just like a good wine, schnapps must first mature before becoming an incomparable delight ...

Duration

The length of storage depends on the variety and can be from 6 months to 3 years — and even longer.
Wooden barrels, glass carboys or stainless steel tanks can serve as the storage vessels. The latter enjoy the most frequent use as they represent the most hygienic and simplest storage technique.

But when it comes to particularly refined varieties, wooden barrels of oak, acacia or even chestnut are used. Because during the maturation process in the barrel, the distillate takes on the colour and taste nuances of the wood, thereby acquiring its typical, unique flavour.

Storage

Once the schnapps is ready and you’ve taken it home, you just have to make sure that the bottle is stored upright at a temperature of 16 to 18 °C and that you observe a few small rules for its enjoyment...
